well,to the first question,if the japanese didn't use fear and terror to rule the people in Singapore,definitely they wouldn't listen to them.as in,to be in their shoes,to have to obey the commands and orders of the japanese,well,as humans, we would not want to be in that situation.take an example from our daily life.if our parents ban us from using the computer,from the usage of our handphones,having to go home immediately after school,basically deprivng us of our freedom,we would rebel if they do not use other prospects like our pocket money to threaten us.i mean no offence in the following example,but take for example,in our own school.mr chua has successfully portrayed a picture of discipline as the discipline master,such that whenever he walks past,students would be fearful and start checking their attires.i guess it was the same as in the past, during the japanese occupation.had the japanese not inflict that fear in the people,they would not have listened to the japanese and their conquering would have been in vain if the people had rebelled against them.
secondly,as discussed in class a very long time ago,to a large extent,yes,but to some extent,no.the japanese were successful in winning the hearts and minds of the peope.under the japanese,the malays became civil servants and later learnt how to govern a country,which came in handy when singapore became independent.however,to the other races,perhaps because of the fear and harsh conditions that the japanese brought along with them with the ruling of singapore,they were not in favour of the japanese,as life was harder under the rule of the japanese.though,tosome races like the indians,they wanted to be free from the British rule and was not happy being under the british law.perhaps,they saw the rule of a japanese as a way of escape from the british rule,perhaps hoping that the japanese would improve their lives or perhaps,leavig them to be independent.
to the third question,i would feel that the imposition of the japanese rule was not necessarily a bad thing.o have been able to learn a new language,japanese,would have been good,a skill which may come in handy in the future.though,there are some disadvantages such as having to sing the japanese anthem each morning,an insult to the nationality of singapore.though, i am very much in support of the learning of a new language.take now for example.in this modern time,people want to be able to speak a few different languages,hence the introduction of the third language.japanese is offered as a third language and is fairly popular with students.language is one that can be retained by one for one's whole life when it is learnt-hence the usefulness of having learn japanese during the japanese occupation.
to the last question,i would say that,at least to the people of singapore,the japanese occupation was characterized as a period of poverty and hardship.for the people in singapore,they were ruled by the japanese,forced to do things because of fear and terror.they lost all their money,property and possessions.everything that was in their names were destroyed or taken over by the japanese.food was rationed,shelter was not exactly ideal and basically,life was hard for the people.to not be able to have freedom,to have your life controlled by another was bad and hence,most people in singapore classified the japanese occupation as a period of hardship and poverty.
